12 | By Design ASGCA members often team up to help projects succeed. Richard Humphreys finds out about some recent collaborations; how they came about and what benefits were delivered. Working together M any of golf’s most revered layouts—like Augusta National, Pine Valley, Cypress Point and Pebble Beach—are the result of a design collaboration. And while members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects are inevitably competitors, they also take pride in working together. This has been true throughout the Society’s history. Even before the ASGCA was formed, two of its founding fathers, Robert Trent Jones and Stanley Thompson, had worked in partnership for most of the 1930s. The spirit of collaboration continues today, with members often turning to each other when a project requires more than one perspective.
