By Design - Summer 2019

3 FOREWORD W elcome to the Summer 2019 issue of By Design magazine. This year’s ASGCA Annual Meeting in Phoenix-Scottsdale was very special for me, being elected as President of the organization I joined almost 30 years ago, and that has helped to shape my work and career since. I am proud to follow in the footsteps of Alice Dye, ASGCA Fellow, to become the second female President of the ASGCA. Alice was always gracious and encouraging to me, and generous in offering meaningful perspective. I look forward to introducing each issue of By Design during my time as President, and learning about the work of my ASGCA colleagues as we share experiences that we hope will be interesting for you, and sometimes helpful and inspirational when considering the evolution of your own golf facility. In this issue’s cover story, which begins on page 12, we hear from some of the members who have helped introduce the game of golf to various regions throughout the world. It is fascinating to learn about the challenges they faced, and the benefits that the sport has delivered in these areas. There’s plenty more in this issue too, including news of new golf design projects and some moments from our Annual Meeting. I hope you enjoy the read.
