Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020

1 0 9 social responsibilities, so we’ll continue to lead the way in finding solutions for an environmentally sustainable future. Our cruise line members and allied partners have already invested billions of dollars to develop technologies that will reduce their environmental impact, so we’ll be sharing more information about these efforts and providing data-driven research to help educate the public. In addition, CLIA is collaborating with several partner associations in the maritime sector to put forth a proposal to the International Maritime Organization to fund and establish an R&D board that would generate US$5 billion over 10 years to help the cruise industry create more advanced technologies that will enable it to reach its ambitious carbon reduction goals. It’s just another example of how our sector is truly leading the way in making travel and tourism environmentally sustainable. How do you plan to increase public awareness about the cruise industry’s positive impact on local communities? Forming strong partnerships with ports, cities, governmental authorities and destination organisations will be vital for the cruise industry’s future success and that’s where CLIA will be focusing our efforts in 2020. By doing this, we’ll be able to fully understand needs of the coastal communities that are directly impacted by cruising and ensure that our cruise line members do everything they can to provide an exceptional experience for both local residents and cruise guests. We hope to combine research-driven data with creative storytelling to shape the narrative of cruising in a meaningful way and strengthen our position as leaders of socially and environmentally responsible tourism.
