Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020

6 1 Spirit of Discovery Scenic Eclipse Saga Cruises’ first purpose-built boutique cruise ship hit the waves in July 2019. Built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, the 999-passenger ship features ‘unashamedly British’ interiors designed by UK-based firm SMC Design. Iconic British design and artwork is showcased throughout, for example a 12-metre-high bronze relief name ‘This Scepter’d Isle’ in the atrium, which was designed as a celebration of British achievements and landscape. Onboard entertainment offerings also reflect British culture with productions created by choreographers and musical directors from London’s world- renowned West End. Scenic Eclipse is the first ocean-going vessel from Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours. Designed by Foreship, the ‘discovery yacht’ was created with Polar Class 6 rating to allow her to operate in polar waters. Since Scenic Eclipse set sail on her maiden cruise from Reykjavik, Iceland in August 2019, guests have been able to make the most of the onboard highlights, which include 114 all-veranda suites, six onboard dining options, a 240-seat theatre, a gym with a separate yoga and Pilates studio, and a 5,000-square-foot spa with treatment rooms and indoor and outdoor whirlpools. Passengers also benefit from extra amenities such as a fleet of zodiacs and kayaks, scuba diving and snorkelling equipment, two onboard helicopters and a seven-seat submarine.
