Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020

6 8 SHIP OF THE YEAR AWARDS Ellen Marie Curie Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 project, the 59-metre-long, 147-passenger Ellen from Danish operator Ærøfærgerne is powered completely by electricity. The ferry’s specially developed battery system, which was fitted by Denmark-based Søby Shipyard, is recharged via a unique charging arm that connects to an onshore station at the ship’s home harbour in Søby. Ærøfærgerne’s commitment to eco- friendly solutions continues onboard the ship. Unlike many ferries, Ellen is free of electronic items like slot machines because they drain the ship’s energy supply. Instead, passengers can browse through a range of reading materials including local attraction brochures while surrounded by minimalist and recycled interior decorations. Baleària’s second LNG newbuild, Marie Curie, was constructed at the Cantiere Navale Visentini shipyard in Italy and began sailing between Huelva, Spain and Tenerife in the Canary Islands in July 2019. At 186 metres long, Marie Curie can accommodate 880 passengers and 608 vehicles. Once onboard, passengers can relax in the Reserve Seating Lounge and watch large TVs from reclining armchairs with complimentary beverages. Other onboard highlights include: the Lobby Bar Lounge, cabins, a self-service restaurant, a bar-cafeteria, an outside bar serving cocktails and barbecued food, children’s entertainment, a 3D cinema and a casino. Passengers can also unwind in the open-air sunbathing area or enjoy massages and beauty treatments at the onboard spa and salon.
