egacy applications built on common busi-

ness-oriented language (COBOL) computer

programming code are widely used in the

business world, yet their popularity is waning.

Experienced COBOL programmers are retiring

and, because the IT industry’s R&D efforts are

no longer aimed at innovating COBOL code and

legacy systems, most modern enterprises are mi-

grating to cheaper, more effective platforms, or

investing in new systems to become more inno-

vative and remain competitive.

Today’s legacy applications and systems tend to

form the core of a business, but much of the busi-

ness value they provide is locked into inflexible

technologies that are expensive to run and diffi-

cult to integrate with new solutions. While moving

these systems to platforms such as the Microsoft

Azure cloud or the .NET framework is complex and

potentially risky, it provides an easy way for enter-

prises to preserve and unlock this value. Plus, after

legacy systems have been migrated, it’s much easier

to adapt them to meet evolving business demands,

and enterprises can even reduce operational costs

by more than 50%. For example, US supermarket

company Associated Food Stores recorded annual

savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars after

using the Asysco AMT Framework to migrate its

core systems to two virtual Microsoft SQL servers.

Migrating legacy systems can be done in differ-

ent ways, with some companies choosing to re-

platform code (leaving it as it is) to cheaper plat-

forms and others opting to completely transform

it. When code is transformed, the entire legacy

rity systems, internal management and opera-
