7 Opening remarks His Eminence Cardinal Christoph Schönborn Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has been Archbishop of Vienna since 1995 and Cardinal since 1998. He has been decorated with many medals and is a member of the European Academy of Sciences, the Congregation of the Faith, the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and the Congregation for Catholic Education. He is also a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and of the Council for Promoting the New Evangelization and a member of the Secretary of the Synod of Bishops. Cardinal Schönborn holds multiple honorary doctor- ates and has authored numerous books.
