Thames Freeport - Britain's Trading Future
[ 31 ] • Supporting the Innovation Hub to share knowledge and create new business opportunities in the Freeport and beyond • Increasing trade in goods and services with the Ports. The Freeport initiative is also important for the UK’s trade with Turkey. Dagenham engine exports to Turkey and the import of finished Transit vehicles from Turkey into the UK accounts for more than 10 per cent of all the trade between the two countries. Sustainability Sustainability is central to the Freeport’s operational vision and Ford is at the vanguard of that commitment. For instance, Dagenham sends zero waste to landfill thanks to innovations such as recovering oil and forming reusable metallic briquettes from grinding sludge. Cold testing technology is used at the plant which allows completed engines to be tested without starting, saving 50,000 litres of diesel per year. LED lighting is used throughout Dagenham, reducing energy consumption by 750,000 kWh per year — enough to power 7,500 houses for one week. MQL (minimum quantity lubrication tools) are used which require 99.8 per cent less water than traditional machining tools, saving 16 million litres of water per year. Dagenham’s three wind turbines provide enough clean energy to power complete engine production at the Dagenham Diesel Centre. Transformational plans include increasing infrastructure utilisation with the possibility of third-party use of the railhead
