Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity
[ ] 10 We need a new deal for nature that requires a significant transformation of our key economic systems — in our food, energy, urban, and production and consumption systems. Only an integrated approach to changing the way we manage and use our land, water and forests will help secure globally important biodiversity. In our current investment cycle, GEF-7, we plan to work on just that: Our new strategy increases by almost 50 per cent the targets for the protection of biodiversity and valuable ecosystems. The strategy focuses on achieving the three objectives of the 2011–2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, which are: to mainstream biodiversity across sectors as well as landscapes and seascapes; address direct drivers to protect habitats and species; and to further develop biodiversity policy and institutional frameworks. Our strategy emphasizes impact programmes directly seeking to address the major drivers of environmental degradation and deliver multiple benefits by working with broad coalitions of stakeholders, including governments, private sector, science and civil society. The GEF looks forward to continuing to work with the CBD and all our partners to ensure a sustainable future for all life on Earth.
