Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020

1 4 9 Navantia’s team hopes to improve on the success of 2019 with new projects and an additional facility in 2020 L ast year presented a number of exciting projects for Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia. The team at its Bay of Cadiz yard repaired almost a dozen cruise vessels, performing six major revitalisation projects on top of standard dry docking works such as hull treatment, stabiliser and valve overhauls and renewing stern tube seals. Large-scale projects have been high on the agenda recently, particularly with three Royal Caribbean International vessels making their way to the dry dock for extensive renovations. In early 2019, Oasis of the Seas required emergency docking and repairs, which Navantia carried out in a quick turnaround, enabling the ship to return to service in time for her next scheduled cruise. Navantia secured the ship’s repeated maintenance contract and she returned to Cadiz in September for a 50-day, US$165 million refurbishment as part of Royal Caribbean’s Royal Amplified enhancement programme. With support from interior outfitter MJM Marine, the shipyard decked the vessel out with a 10-storey Ultimate Abyss slide, the Splashaway Bay children’s waterpark and Perfect Storm trio of waterslides, as well as new dining venues and entertainment offerings. Freedom of the Seas and Allure of the Seas will also spend time at the Spanish shipyard between January and March 2020, and March and May 2020, respectively. They will each receive a similar treatment to Oasis of the Seas, although Freedom of the Seas will offer slightly fewer waterpark attractions. Navantia is also expanding its cruise repair efforts in 2020 by repurposing its facilities in Ferrol, Spain. Its multiple dry docks and proximity to Northwest Europe’s sailing routes make the yard an ideal option for small and medium-sized ships, and will free up space at the Cadiz yard to take on more projects. Cruise operators in this region will now have access to Navantia’s expertise, quality and technical capabilities with a day less of route deviation.
