2 5 6 PortMiami’s range of tourist attractions is keeping cruise lines interested and boosting the local economy as a result N icknamed the ‘Capital of Latin America’ and a major hub for finance, media, entertainment, arts, and international trade, Miami truly has something for everyone. Its proximity to Caribbean islands such as Cuba and The Bahamas has resulted in a cultural capital, enriched by the customs and culinary heritage of the surrounding areas. Food lovers can entertain themselves with a secret cuisine tour through the city, where they are introduced to some of Miami’s local delicacies such as vaca frita (fried beef), Peruvian ceviche (raw fish cured in citrus juices) or plantain- based dishes. Miami’s art scene is also a key tourist attraction, particularly the district of Wynwood, which contains an outdoor museum that showcases large-scale works by some of the world’s best-known street artists. For those seeking a more adventurous taste of Miami, there are over 50 underwater wreck sites in the area that are accessible to scuba divers, as well as the eco-adventure location Jungle Island that features rock climbing walls and ropes courses. The city’s prime location also enables cruise visitors to step further afield during their time in the area. For example, there are day trips available to attractions such as Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios Florida, as well as to Florida Keys island Key West, complete with a ride on the world-famous Conch Train. But perhaps the region’s most famous attraction is one created by Mother Nature herself; the Everglades. Tourists can visit the area, which is made up of 1.5 million acres of preservation wetlands, to spot some of its native animal species, such as freshwater crocodiles, and the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther and West Indian manatee. Miami’s offerings have not gone unnoticed. In recent years the port has referred to itself as the ‘cruise capital of the world’, having welcomed the largest numbers of passengers in the industry. PortMiami is clearly a firm favourite among cruise lines.
