Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020

3 Welcome to the 20s Foreword S S / 20 This decade will see significant changes in the way we live and any industry seeking to thrive must adapt rapidly. Cruise Lines International Association’s industry outlook for 2020 emphasised the magnitude of three big game- changers for passenger shipping: environmental sustainability, embracing innovation and destination stewardship. Passenger shipping is assuredly agile in all three aspects. Innovation is scheduled into newbuilds long before the technology is fully proven or added as it emerges. Such invention demands recognition and so it’s with great pride that we reveal the winners of the inaugural Cruise & Ferry Ship of the Year Awards on page 57. We were delighted to receive thousands of votes from you, our readers, Thank you. I hope you enjoy reading about the winners and shortlisted ships. We’ve started this decade with a few changes of our own too, including a refresh of our branding and design for consistency with our annual Cruise & Ferry Interiors and Cruise & Ferry Itinerary Planning publications. This has meant dropping ‘International’ from our title, which itself was increasingly tautological – our editorial remit is implicitly global. Our final announcement is that we’re now a member of World Ocean Council (WOC). The WOC has a close allegiance with the United Nations, who we also work with through our Human Development Forum initiative (see www. humandevelopmentforum.org for more information). This issue provides another curated compendium of insightful interviews, features, viewpoints and reports focused on sustainability, innovation, destination best practices and much more. And it all starts with our keynote interview with Carnival Corporation’s Arnold Donald on page 11. Happy reading!
