Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020

6 9 W.B. Yeats Visborg Named in honour of the Irish poet, W. B. Yeats entered service in March 2019 and, as Irish Ferries’ first new ferry since 2000, showcased the latest in innovation and comfort. The line worked with marine architecture and engineering firm OSK-ShipTech and Dublin-based design company Minima to create its onboard offerings which include large open spaces, neutral and natural materials and decorative elements featuring Yeats’ poetry. During construction the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft shipyard fitted W.B. Yeats with next-generation engineering systems and the latest scrubber technology to reduce harmful emissions. The ferry also uses energy-efficient LED lighting systems, as well as a ballast water treatment system to minimise its environmental impact. Rederi AB Gotland’s new dual-fuel ro-pax ferry, Visborg, entered service in March 2019, operating between Sweden and Gotland. The 200-metre-long vessel can accommodate around 1,650 passengers and offers 1,750 lane metres for vehicles. Danish company OSK-ShipTech acted as a consulting naval architect during the ship’s design and helped China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International with the architectural, interior and exterior designs. Passengers can make use of onboard amenities including the Food Market Restaurant, the Bistro Lounge, a conference room, lounges, a shop, a games room, a cafe, a cinema, an arcade and games room, and two children’s playrooms. As a cruise ferry, the ship also contains 112 day cabins which are all air-conditioned and feature en suite bathrooms.
