Cruise and Ferry Review - Summer/Spring 2020
7 3 Volcán de Tagoro Venus Clipper Volcán de Tagoro is a catamaran operated by the Spanish shipping firm Naviera Armas. She has been sailing between Gran Canaria and Tenerife in the Canary Islands since August 2019, providing a high-speed connection with a journey time of just over an hour and 30 minutes. Built by Incat, the 111-metre- long ship accommodates 1,184 passengers and features first-, business- and economy-class lounges, as well as bars, food service areas and a gift shop. Volcán de Tagoro was named after the submarine volcano which erupted in 2011 beneath the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro. During her 25-day voyage from the Incat shipyard in Australia, the ferry sailed directly above the volcano to pay tribute to her namesake. Venus Clipper started sailing on the UK’s River Thames in March 2019, following her maiden voyage from Wight Shipyard Co. on the Isle of Wight. She operates as a river bus in Central London, carrying up to 220 passengers between the city’s many floating piers. The catamaran has twin symmetric hulls designed by One2three Naval Architects to combat any issues that may be caused by frequent berthing, contact with obstructions and harsh weather conditions. Venus Clipper was also designed for the unique tidal conditions of the River Thames, ensuring she can navigate the river’s shallow reaches and London’s low bridges. Passengers can make use of comfortable onboard seating areas, free wi-fi and licensed bars.
