Active fisherfolk includes people who spend most of their time and/or derive the major share of their income from fishing. Fisher families are families having one or more active fishers and the family spends most of its time in fishing-related activities or derives a major share of their income from fishing. However, in the case of India, apart from this functional definition of fisher families, fisher families also include people and families who are by caste fishermen (as in the case of Hindu fishers) and/or are engaged in fishing over generations and are socially recognized as fishers (as in the case of Muslim and Christian fishers). Therefore, this social identity is more important for their inclusion as fisher families in the census than economic dependence on fisheries. 9.
