FOREWORD

M

ost professions change over time. For some, it’s clear that the future

will be fundamentally different. The advance of self-driving vehicles

could render truck and taxi driving obsolete and new healthcare

technologies could see physicians devoting most of their time to educating

patients on prevention, rather than administering treatment.

But what about golf course architecture? Some aspects of our work are

still very similar to the practices of our founding fathers. But will continued

advances in technology, environmental factors and golfers’ evolving

preferences lead to profound change in the future?

With missions including fostering professionalism and supporting design

excellence, ASGCA has, since its founding, carefully considered the role and

practices of the golf course architect. In our cover story for this issue, which

begins on page 12, we asked members what they think the profession will be

like by 2030.

The responses make fascinating reading, suggesting some clear trends for the

future and raising some possibilities that stretch the limits of our imagination.

I hope you enjoy the read.
